Occupational Safety and Health

The goal of an Occupational Safety and Health program is to provide protection against physical and health related hazards in the workplace. At IUB, we accomplish this goal by first identifying the hazards associated with each job. Once hazards are identified, they are reduced or elimiinated in a variety of ways from guarding moving parts on a piece of equipment, to wearing protective gloves when handling chemicals, to rotating the amount of time spent working in extreme temperatures with warming or cooling breaks. If there is a practical way to reduce or eliminate a hazard through engineering means or work practice controls, those methods are preferred before putting employees in personal protective equipment to do a job. However, those means are not possible or practical in every situation.
